Historical Background

Since the 19th century, the Oisans has welcomed those looking to discover the wild valleys and as yet unconquered peaks.

The men from the valley have always been at the side of those adventurers. This has led to the founding of many a family tradition of guides such as the Turcs, the Rodiers and the Paquets.

One of these men happened to be Pierre GASPARD. He earned his place in history on the 16th August 1877 when he completed the ascent of the Meije by the South face (setting out from La Bérarde) with his client Emmanuel Boileau de Castelnau, yet another success to add to his list of achievements.

The museum « Mémoires d'Alpinismes » goes back in time to retrace the passion and stories of these great men.
